Anna-Maria Maak
ABOUT
Anna-Maria Maak ﷯Raised in the region of Thuringia, she received her most important artistic impulses and inspiration through remarkable professors: Gregor Weichert (in Münster, Germany), Volkmar Lehmann (in Weimar), Karl-Heinz Kämmerling (in Bayreuth), Peter Feuchtwanger (Nürnberg); including master classes in Finland and the United Kingdom. But her artistic restlessness and natural curiosity to explore other fields of human intellect have led her, in parallel with the music, to the study of languages at the University of Leipzig. This multidimensional approach is perhaps what motivates her to discover always new elements in her musical performance, new aspects of musical interaction with her audience. The critic attests time and again "a careful interpretation up in the finest detail" (2), not only of the great milestones of piano repertoire since Bach but also of exceptional new works and contemporary authors like Penderecki. This is how in September 2009 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, she gave "a great premiere" (3) of 'Concertante do Imaginário' for piano and orchestra by celebrated Brazilian Maestro Marlos Nobre, who was present at this event and declared euphoric: "it has been a source of great satisfaction, naturally under the high level of musicianship and professionalism demonstrated by the pianist Anna-Maria Maak...a champion of the music of the Americas and Spain". Other important composers with whom she has worked directly include Leo Brouwer (Cuba), Spanish Maestros Luis de Pablo, Carlos Cruz de Castro and Venezuelan musician Sef Albertz. These collaborations have resulted in world premieres and/or first performances of new compositions, some of which have been written especially for her. Multifaceted and as it's appropriate for her enterprising spirit, Anna-Maria Maak also has developed in Leipzig, Germany, where she currently resides, diverse artistic projects such as a Festival of Ibero-American music, which has been supported by the UNESCO and the Cervantes Institute of Spain among other important institutions. This project has enabled her to create an appropriate platform for the realization of multimedia events, "a new way of piano recital" (4) where the instrument comes in conjunction with light, sound and video installations, "a clever dramaturgy ... a mature concept" (4), where Anna-Maria Maak employs not only her musical talent but her natural acting abilities as a narrator. Part of this work has been captured in sound recordings, as in the case of the Cd 'PLATERO AND I'. Available are already the double albums 'INFANCIA' (Childhood, 2012), with Spain and Latin America piano music and 'HOMMAGE' (Homage, 2013) that includes compositions by Bach, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Albertz. Upcoming projects include the first worldwide publication of 2 new CD productions (‘Resplendences…’ & ‘…In the Secret of the World’) with the piano work of Sef Albertz and the DVD production "Other Nuances".
